Biodegradable
When exposed to light, air, moisture and microbes, biodegradable materials break down to natural elements that are found in nature.
Biodegradable material means that the material will break down naturally when exposed to moisture, microbes, air, and light. Everything can technically degrade eventually, but many plastics take tens of thousands of years to complete the process. Even worse, they leach toxins into the soil as they do so.
If a product is called biodegradable, it can break down to natural elements within a generation. In other words, after a generation, only naturally occurring materials will be left. Judging whether a material is biodegradable is black and white. Either it will all break down within a generation, or it won’t.
It is also worth noting that some materials are biodegradable if they go in a landfill but not if they end up in the ocean. Keep that in mind as you choose your packaging.
Why should use biodegradable packaging
Choosing to use biodegradable packaging like that offered by Beneco Packaging helps you do your part to protect the planet. This is a simple way to reduce your carbon footprint. It also helps you promote your brand as sustainable.
When choosing biodegradable materials, however, always pay close attention to whether the material is actually biodegradable. Marketing can be deceptive, and it can be hard to find materials that are truly biodegradable.
Beneco and biodegradability
At Beneco Packaging, we are always transparent about the sustainability of our materials. If we say a material is biodegradable, it is 100% biodegradable, and you don’t have to worry.
